Danny Cleary
Stanley Cup Champion 2008
The Stanley Cup is the oldest professional sports
trophy in North America. Today, it comes to one of the oldest cities in
North America for a short time, on its way to Stanley Cup champion
Daniel Cleary’s hometown of Riverhead, Harbour Grace, to the cheer of
thousands of fellow Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
Cleary, a key part of the Detroit Red Wings Stanley Cup championship
team, will pick up the cup when it arrives at St. John’s International
Airport at 12:40 p.m. today. He is expected to make a short speech to
the crowds of fans expected to gather at the airport, and will take the
cup to the Janeway Children’s Hospital this afternoon.
On Tuesday, Canada Day, Cleary will bring the cup to Harbour Grace for a
motorcade and full day of celebrations. Cleary is the first
Newfoundland-born player to have his name engraved on the Lord Stanley’s
Mug.
Premier Danny Williams said Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are
passionate hockey fans and have long-awaited this moment.
“Danny Cleary’s hard work and determination have inspired sports-minded
youth across the province to strive for athletic excellence and we look
forward to welcoming the Cup and to paying tribute to Danny,” Williams
said.
Justice Minister Jerome Kennedy, MHA for the District of
Carbonear-Harbour Grace, said this is a proud day for Harbour Grace and
the entire province.
“It was a personal highlight for me to watch the Detroit Red Wings win
the Stanley Cup in Pittsburgh earlier this month,” Kennedy said. “Danny
Cleary played a pivotal role in that victory, and he has set an
excellent example for the youth of our province.”

Danny, I was home two weeks ago, Father's Day and drove past my
father's ship, The Kyle. The Kyle was all dressed up, for your
arrival. I am Capt Guy Earle's daughter, and he would have been
very proud of what you've accomplished. Have a great day home
tomorrow, and I would give my eye teeth to be there.
Congratulations. Go to me website, ssKyle.com Love from, The
